Solid Waste

 

YARD WASTE: 
As you know, yard waste will be starting soon (the week of April 3rd).  All yard waste must be in brown paper yard waste bags or labeled trash cans 30 gallons or less.  Sticks and branches must be tied and bundled with string and not more than 4 foot in length.  50 pound maximum on any bag, container or bundle.  "NO" flower pots, flats, lumber, animal waste, railroad ties or trash of any kind.

YARD WASTE:  The part of solid waste composed of grass clippings, leaves, twigs, branches and other garden refuse.

Solid Waste Disposal Service is provided by the City of Mentor-on-the-Lake.  Our contract is currently with Republic Services of Ohio Hauling, LLC.  Pick up is provided weekly, with yard waste pick up on the same day from the first full week of April to the end of November.  

Effective November 1, 2010 Curb-side recycling will begin.  Recyling carts will be emptied every other week on your regular scheduled solid waste pick up day.

Recyling weeks for 2012 are:

1/8, 1/22, 2/5, 2/19, 3/4, 3/18, 4/1, 4/15, 4/29, 5/13, 5/27, 6/10, 6/24, 7/8, 7/22, 8/5, 8/19, 9/2, 9/16, 9/30, 10/14, 10/28, 11/11, 11/25, 12/9 and 12/23.


 Recyclable Materials Include:

Cardboard, newspapers, junk-mail, magazines, cereal boxes, glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans (rinse and crush), steel cans (rinse) and numbers 1 and 2 plastics (rinse, remove lids & neck rings & crush).  Place all items loose in recycling cart.

NOTE:  Do NOT jam items into cart or overstuff container.

Items EXCLUDED from Recycling Collections:

Window glass, light bulbs, drinking glasses, mirrors or ceramics and plastic containers that are contaiminated (i.e. motor oil, antifreeze, pesticide and herbicide containers and those with food).  Place above items and empty containers in trash container.

Billing for the solid waste program is done through the City with payments due as follows:

  • February 1 for period of February 1 to April 30
  • May 1 for period of May 1 to July 31
  • August 1 for period of August 1 to October 31
  • November 1 for period of November 1 to January 31

As of February 1, 2012 the current rate for garbage/recycling is $50 per quarter.

For those with the Homestead Exemption the quarterly rate is $38.

HOLIDAY PICKUP:

During the week a holiday occurs, collection will be the day after your regular pickup day following the holiday unless the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday (then there will be no delay in service).  Observed holidays are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
