Fire Prevention

Fire Prevention

The purpose of the Fire Prevention Bureau is to reduce the number of fire incidents through effective Public Education and Code Enforcement.  This results in lowering the loss of property and loss of life due to Fire.  It is headed by the Chief of the Department and operated by a Fire Safety Inspector.

As part of public education the Fire Prevention Bureau currently offers the following services FREE of charge for our residents upon request:

  • Free smoke detector program!
  • Fire Inspection of your residence for fire safety hazards
  • Tour of the Fire Station

The Fire Prevention Bureau also manages the Public Education Bureau. We  conduct programs at the various elementary schools within the Mentor School system.  The program involves educating children to the hazards of fire by teaching them the difference between tools & toys; Stop, Drop, & Roll; Crawl Low Under Smoke; EDITH; Gasoline Hazards; Babysitting Responsibilities.

The Mentor on the Lake Fire Prevention Bureau currently uses four different code sets to keep the city safe.  The Bureau uses the Codified Ordinances of the City Of Mentor on the Lake, The Ohio Fire Code, BOCA National Fire Code, and NFPA Life Safety Code. The Bureau conducts inspections of all public and commercial facilities for compliance to all of the applicable codes.  The Bureau works in conjunction with other agencies within the city and Lake County to keep our city as safe as possible!
